On Creativity

I recall an epiphany I had months ago. “I’m not a creative person, but rather,  a creative solver.” It encapsulated very well what I think keeps me from those who were more creavitely expressive than I - The College Experience brought me to quite a few musicians, writers, and artists… at least, more than what your typical Engineering student would expect.

The first thing that separates us, is Creation. Sure, I’ve got technical skills in Video Editing and Image Manipulation (read: fancy $10 words for Premiere and Photoshop skillz) but I’m limited in what I can come across. My “Art,” if you will, requires materials, a source. This relates to my earlier quote: I can take things (code, pictures, etc.) and make something with it. But with nothing, I make nothing.

The second characteristic, and by far, the more important, is Boldness. To express oneself, no matter what language one uses, one automatically assumes the risk of being misinterpreted and misunderstoood. I take criticism pretty harshly, no matter how well I agree with it, so it pretty much explains it self.

All in all, everyone has creativity, but everyone uses it differently. The worst off are the ones who don’t use it at all.
